A lot of people underestimate the importance of cyber security and how much your business needs to be protected.

It’s easy to not make it a priority. After all, it’s only something that a lot of business owners think about after something has already gone wrong.

Did you know that, in the UK over the last year, Cyber Crime has risen by 31%?

Did you also know that 43% of these cyber attacks target small businesses?

It’s becoming increasingly crucial to have safety measures in place, because the scary truth is that your business is at great risk.

Would you leave your door unlocked to your home?

No! That would be insane. There would be a risk of a thief strolling in and stealing some precious possessions.

So why is your business any different? Not having cyber-security for your business works the same exact way – you are leaving your business open for malicious criminals to come right in and steal confidential information.

Keep it secret, keep it safe

So how exactly do you keep your business “door” locked? It’s honestly not that much different from the way your home uses locks, security cameras, and alarms. Check out the video below, or carry on reading.

Up-to-date software

We see so many people postponing updates, not really wanting to deal with the update process.

Well not only is updating software usually and straightforward, but these updates should be installed as soon as they are available. Keeping devices up to date is an important step toward data protection and is critical to mitigating the risk of a data breach.

Hackers can discover vulnerabilities in software, which are often caused by bugs, and use them to damage your computer system and steal personal information.

That update could be the difference between a cyber-attack being successful, versus the updates patching the vulnerability and keeping your data safe.

Use a password manager

Password managers are more than just tools to help us remember all the millions of passwords we use every day. They can also generate strong passwords for you. Many attacks use brute force to guess a password, so the more secure it is, the better.

It also allows you to easily access your passwords across all of your computers, smartphones, and tablets – meaning no matter where you’re working, you can get into where you need to.

Secure network

Everything related to your business is stored on your network. Depending on the size of your business, a lot of people may have access to the data. Having a secure network means that all employees can only access documents relevant to them. Keeping more confidential information safe and secure is paramount for any business.

Multi-factor Authentication

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could stop attacks in their tracks, before they’ve even really begun? Well, that’s exactly what multi-factor authentication is incredibly effective at – stopping attacks before they start.

It works like this: when trying to log in to work files, a login code will generate on another device such as your phone. You will then be asked to accept this, to prove that it’s you trying to access the documents. If someone unwanted was trying to break into the files, they would not be able to access the information as you would need to approve it via your phone.

Not only does this mean the attacker can’t get in, it also gives you warning that someone wants to steal the information.

How many of these cyber security tools do you have in place?

If the answer is none, your business is at extreme risk. 60% of small businesses unfortunate enough to be victims of a cyber-attack go out of business within six months.
